Trivandrum: The resurgent monsoon in Kerala has become a worry than relief for locals. With rains lashing the state, the dams and reservoirs have reached to their full capacity, forcing the authorities to open the shutters.
Rescue operations are underway with Southwest monsoon triggering flash floods and landslides in the state.
As water levels rise in various dams and reach almost their maximum capacity, shutters of at least 24 reservoirs in Kerala have been opened to drain out excess water.
All five sluice gates of the Idukki reservoir were released today to release excess water.
More than 10,000 people have been shifted to 157 relief camps across the state in the last two days, the government said.
The armymen evacuated 30 stranded tourists in Munnar to safety.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan described the situation as “very grim” with army columns being deployed at Ayannkulu, Idukki and Wayanad.
The army, navy, air force and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are already engaged in rescue and relief operations in the worst affected districts.
Wayanad district was completely cut off by landslides and the army personnel were pressed into service to restore road network in the hill district.
